Calgary’s published guidance says property owners must remove snow and ice from public sidewalks bordering their property, down to bare surface, within 24 hours after snowfall ends. Certain public pathways bordering a property must be cleared to a minimum width of 1.5 metres within the same period.
Snow from your private driveway or walkway must be piled on your property. The City distinguishes this from snow cleared from a public sidewalk or pathway. Plan a storage location before the first clearing, especially on small lots and commercial sites with limited parking.
A private snow contract should clearly identify the bordering sidewalk and the required timing. Requesting a quote through this website does not arrange clearing or satisfy the requirement. Confirm the current rule and your specific responsibilities directly with the City.

Snow storage is part of winter property planning. Piles beside a foundation, over a swale or across a drain can affect the route meltwater takes. Keep drainage routes visible when conditions allow, and record recurring pooling during a thaw. Clearing snow does not correct a yard that slopes toward the house. Our Calgary freeze-thaw guide explains the connection; drainage correction information helps separate a seasonal obstruction from an underlying drainage issue.
