Grading across Calgary, Alberta

We review enquiries throughout the city; independent contractor availability must be confirmed. What changes between Calgary properties is not the principle, it is the amount of soil, the access, and where the water is allowed to go.

Within Calgary

All four quadrants: northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast. The city covers a very wide range of lot ages and conditions, from inner-city properties where a machine has to come down a lane to newer subdivisions where the lot is still governed by an active grading approval.

On a city lot there is usually somewhere defined for water to end up: a street, a lane, or a swale that carries it to one. That constraint is what makes urban grading tractable, and it is the first thing we establish.

Coverage outside Calgary

Surrounding-community coverage has not been published as a fixed service area. If a property is outside Calgary, the honest answer depends on distance, access, scope and whether the drainage issue can be assessed responsibly.

This site does not create city-name landing pages until there is confirmed service coverage and genuinely useful local information for that place.

What actually varies

How the type of property changes the job

This matters more than which quadrant you are in. Two houses ten kilometres apart can need very different work, and two neighbours can need the same.

Property typeWhat is typicalWhat usually goes wrong
Established inner-city lotsWhat is typicalMature trees, decades of added soil, tight or lane-only machine access. What usually goes wrongGrades that have drifted well away from the original design, and root zones that constrain how much soil can be moved.
Post-war and mid-century suburbsWhat is typicalWider lots, established landscaping, original drainage patterns often still intact. What usually goes wrongLocalised low spots and settled perimeters rather than whole-lot failures.
Newer subdivisionsWhat is typicalNarrow side yards, close spacing, active lot grading approvals. What usually goes wrongBackfill settlement around the foundation, and shared side-yard swales that get interrupted.
Larger edge-of-city propertiesWhat is typicalLonger surface runs, limited curb drainage and larger volumes of soil. What usually goes wrongDrainage may need more site-specific planning than a standard city lot.

Why there are no neighbourhood pages on this site

You will not find a page here for Tuscany, Auburn Bay, Mahogany, Bowness or any other community. That is deliberate.

Pages like that are usually the same article with the community name swapped, which helps nobody and is exactly the kind of thing search engines are designed to filter out. There is nothing meaningfully different to say about grading in one Calgary community versus another that is not already covered by the property types above.

What genuinely differs between properties is lot age, access, soil, and where water is permitted to leave. Those are covered in the service pages and in the guides, and they apply regardless of postal code.
